Spiritual Workout: Dig Deeper
Spiritual Workout: Dig Deeper
Scripture: “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame. ” (Isaiah 50:7)
Observation: Even after this morning’s workout is over, I can still hear the voice of Shaun-T, personal trainer, in my ear. There is something about a trainer that motivates you to push through and push a little harder. This morning Shaun-T told us to look at having a face of determination. As I opened my Bible this morning I read these words in Isaiah about a spiritual workout. Isaiah starts by saying:
“Because the Sovereign Lord helps me.” I immediately thought of a personal trainer. The Holy Spirit is our helper, encourager and motivator: “Use your core,” “Don’t slow down or give up,” “Keep that form,” “You can do it, you just need to dig deeper.” Some people don’t respond well to personal trainers, others are motivated and excel when they are pushed. Thankfully our God speaks to us and motivates us in a way that is good for us. But some of us, need a navy seal God pushing us and motivating us.
“I will not be disgraced.” God helps us so that we can emerge victoriously. The nation of Israel was facing disgrace because they felt abandoned by God when taken into captivity. Isaiah’s encouragement is that because God is with us and helping us, we will not be disgraced. The key is to do what he says we should do. We avoid disgrace when we accept his help, accept his will for us and submit to his workout program for our spiritual man.
“Therefore, I will set my face like a stone, determined to do his will.” There is resolve, determination and tenacity when we set our face to do something. When I’m working out, racing, playing sports, I put on my “game face” and push through. When we do this we mentally we stay focused and we push through to that goal. God sees what we are capable of; he designed us for something so much bigger. We tend to quit too early, but we have God’s voice in our ear saying: ”Come on, keep going. There’s nothing you can’t do; there’s noting you can’t accomplished. I know you’re tired but I know you can push through.
Application: I don’t know what kind of voices you respond too, but maybe you need a navy seal approach. Maybe you’ve been apathetic so long that you feel your spiritual muscles atrophy. It’s not too late. It’s not time to take a break; it’s time to dig deep. We need to dig deeper, grow stronger, serve more, step out of our comfort zone and into the realm of the miraculous. God calls us to pray for revelation, heal the sick, share the gospel, serve the church and reach out into our community. It is not time to sit down it is time to get up and get moving.
When we step into God’s will for our lives we will not be put to shame. We will grow into the spiritually fit people he created us to be. The only way we will be put to shame is if we stay on our couches, eating Twinkies getting spiritually lazy. We need to stop letting other people do the work while we sit there and watch.
Are you sick and tired of being spiritually lazy and unhealthy? What are you going to do about it?
Prayer: Lord, I want to hear your voice in my ear telling me to push through. I want to submit to your workout plan for my life. I want to be the person that you designed me to be and I am ready to lay down all my excuses and dig deeper into your Word and your will for me. I’m ready. Let’s go.
